What is concept Art?

Concept art is a visual communication approach that helps realize a vision or an idea.  The people who commission concept artists are looking to get help in bringing their ideas to life on paper so they can use the concept art to help communicate an idea.  For example, a director can use concept art to pitch his ideas to investors for funding or a production designer can use it to help communicate a design to the fabricators so they can build the set for shooting.  Those are just some examples.  The bottom line is, it is mainly use for communication. 

Concept Art 101 Introduction

My name is Aaron, and I am a freelance concept designer in the film, commercial, and theme park industry. I learned my trade from Art Center College of Design.   I love what I do. I feel very fortunate to be doing what I love and get pay to do it.  My path to be a concept artist was not a direct path.  To be honest, I didn’t even know concept design was a career option until I got into college.  It was then, at a book store, I saw a Art of Starwar book and by the time I closed that book, I have found a new career path: Concept Art.  It was all Doug Chiang’s fault! When I started looking on the web for answers as to where to start and what to do. I found a couple of concept artists who were working in the film industry and learned that they went to Art Center.
